FOUNDING PASTORS: Harrison & Laverne Sewell
In 1966 Founding Pastors Harrison M. and Laverne Sewell received a word from God to start a church in the Dallas, Texas suburb of Pleasant Grove. In that same year, they purchased an old condemned house and began renovating it into a church. At their first service in September 1966, there were 14 people in attendance, 5 of which were the Sewell family. The entire Sewell family ministered in each service. Harrison Sewell would preach the Word of God; Laverne Sewell would teach the children; and their children, Sheree, Harry and Suzanne would sing. Despite the small beginning, the congregation grew and it wasn't long before a new facility including classrooms, offices and a sanctuary were built. All three of the Sewell children continued to minister with their parents as the church grew.
In 1994 the church decided to move from their one-acre facility in Pleasant Grove and purchase 43 acres in Mesquite. God continues to bless Family Cathedral and has provided for them to build a sanctuary, gymnasium, school, daycare, classrooms and offices.
On July 30, 2007, Laverne went home to be with the Lord. Her legacy and dedication will be forever felt. Then on December 21, 2010 our beloved founding pastor finished his course and joined Laverne in the presence of the Lord. We were all truly impacted by his integrity, love and dedication he demonstrated to all he touched. Family Cathedral is a true foundation of that heritage.
